When writing an executive summary to be submitted to a group of investors there are a number of things in which you will need to demonstrate. Characteristics such as your management team experience, profitable business model, and market potential are all extremely important in your effort to raise capital, but one thing may be more important than them all. And that is your ability to scale. It is not a stretch to say that 99% of businesses can not scale. So what does scalability mean in terms of your business? What are some of the hurdles to scalability for your business? How can you prove to investors that your business will scale profitably?

What does Scalability Mean? – The term scalability in business essentially means the ability to grow the business exponentially without losing quality of the product or service or profitability of the business.

Why is Scalability Difficult? – Scalability is difficult for a number of reasons. First of all, most businesses are structured in such a way that it is impossible to take on a growing list of clients for an indefinite amount of time. If you are a consultant you can not keep working with more and more clients. There are only so many hours in a day, so your typical consulting company can only scale to a certain extent. Another reason that internet businesses are difficult to scale is that your IT infrastructure can only take so much. Consider the constant issues that services like Twitter have. The exponential growth is difficult on their systems. Even though Twitter can scale, there will be constant IT issues as they grow.

How do you Prove Scalability to Investors? – In order to prove your ability to scale your business to investors you will need to develop and implement automated processes. If you have to take orders by hand over the phone, investors will be quick to realize that your current business can not scale. If you develop a plan and maybe a bare bones system to take those orders automatically then investors will begin to pay attention. You also need to prove that your business can scale profitably. You might be able to grow exponentially, but if you lose profit margin with each additional order an investor will lose interest.

Ultimately the key is to show investors that your business is not destined to be a million dollar in annual revenue business forever. Investors are looking for businesses that can realistically reach a $10 million revenue level within a reasonable period of time. So start to think big. How can you scale your business to grow from a small startup to a strong growth story. Make sure to address your potential investors concerns right in your executive summary or risk loosing your chance to secure that necessary financing.
