Business Plan Veterinary

Opening a Pet Store?
I plan to open a pet store within the next 5 – 10 years .
What kind of classes should I look into I know nothing about business (I do know I will take something to do with accounting) but other than that I am clueless.
I am not sure whether or not it will house animals ( I think any person should look to a rescue before a pet store).
But if I do decide to sell animals it will only be animals not offered in the only shelter (it’s a refuge shelter the only animals that are put down are one’s that are so sick they won’t make it) where I live (like small animals and fish and possibly reptiles).
I don’t have the option to work in a pet store because one does not exist here.
I will be taking veterinary classes as well there will also be an in house veterinarian who I know personally and would trust any animal I own with.
I had my own store a few years ago – opened it myself – ran it for 3 years then sold it…
if you have any questions after this – feel free to e-mail me.
I took a course on helping you open your own business.. it included accounting, advertising, hiring staff, etc… it was 6 years ago – forgive me if I dont remember..
my BIGGEST oversight was that I thought I would be busier than I was the first year.. I really lost alot of money that year.. and spent alot of time doing NOTHING.. 2 – 3 customers..
the other mistake I made was hiring staff right away.. I never took a wage – but my staff did.. I would have been better off NOT hiring staff until I was sure I needed them..
I NEVER sold pups or kittens.. only BETTA FISH.. (my store was small)..
I eventually worked out an agreement with a resuce group they had a few of their pets – if the pet got adopted the group got the adoption fee,, BUT the people were required to buy a bag of food.. usually the bought more -the shelter supplied the supplies for the pet.. EXCEPT for food – I had an arangment with a food company that they provided free food in exchange for the new owners being asked to buy a bag of food..
I did this with cats, kittens, and 2 litters of pups..
anyhow.. you must have ALOT of money before you do this.. and be willing to change peoples minds about shopping at big box stores – you must have a REASON for them to shop at your store
the BEST thing I did was get a groomer in – she paid me $5 out of every dog she groomed and $100 a month… she supplied all her stuff – so basically was “renting” space from me.. but it brought people in.. that was good.
