A career as a personal chef can be a great way to hone your craft and get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy food service kitchens that most Las Vegas chefs work in.

Personal chefs serve a variety of clients in Las Vegas, from families with two incomes to single, career-minded individuals to people with specialized dietary needs. Clients often use personal chefs because their busy Las Vegas lifestyle means they don’t have time to cook healthy food for themselves or their family. Some of them also just enjoy good cooking and don’t want to do it themselves.

It’s important to know that personal chefs don’t just serve one client. While private chefs in Las Vegas may be employed full time by one client, often living with the family they’re cooking for, personal chefs can prepare multiple meals for a number of different clients at one time.

Most personal chefs will design and cook a whole host of meals at once, meeting the dietary needs of different Las Vegas clients by preparing meals ahead of time. The chefs are responsible for planning menus, purchasing the necessary ingredients, and preparing the food (either in the client’s kitchen or in their own). The made-ahead meals can then be refrigerated or frozen; all the personal chef needs to do is provide reheating instructions to his/her client (and clean up after themselves).

But not everyone can be successful as a personal Las Vegas chef. Even if you enjoy cooking, there are many considerations to think about before becoming a personal chef. A good candidate will have great cooking skills, a strong marketing sense, and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Experience is Good

First, it’s a good idea to have at least a certificate from a culinary program before embarking on your own. If you already have a certificate and have been working in a restaurant, make sure you’re ready to leave behind the stability of general food service. Las Vegas can be a fickle job market, so weigh your options carefully.

Once you have your certificate, pull together a business plan for gathering clients and selling yourself. A good first step is a strong web site that explains who you are and why you’re good at it.

Work for Yourself

The reality is that being a personal chef in Las Vegas effectively means starting your own business. Taking the leap out on your own can be scary and exciting, and may pay off well in the end. Just make sure you’re prepared. After all, why go the way of other boring food service chefs in Las Vegas? Get a certificate or degree and get your name out there.
