Business Plan Risk And Rewards

i want to become a paramedic but i’m not sure if it’s a good idea?

ok here it gos I’m kind of in the middle of the road in college and I’ve chosen EMT over computers. i just want to know a few things because i plan on becoming a paramedic. over all is the job rewarding? how much can a paramedic expect to make in new Mexico? i know it’s about the passion of the job but i also want a career. I’m going to community college (CNM) would it be a good idea to try to transfer to UNM? how much do these people look down on what school you came from apposed to the skills you have learnt? should i get a chauffeurs license? any help would be appreciated. i just don’t think I’m a business man and i don’t have the money to make it in a tech school. i would have to quit my job and take a huge risk when I’m not sure if network administration is what i really want to do.

Becoming a paramedic is one of the most rewarding things you can do with your life but there are caveats. First, is the cost vs rewards thing. EMTs in general are at the bottom of the salary pile. Medics in this neck of the woods, make around 30-35 thousand a year. there are some locations that pay better but not in Rural New Mexico.
Second is burnout. The average medic will burn out in 8-10 years on average. There are some who go much longer but this is a statistical average.
You will see people die, some of them will be friends if you live and work in a small town. You will see things and do things you never thought you were capable of and for the most part, you will make a positive difference in someone’s life on a daily basis.
There will be many “grunt runs’ that may bore you to tears and there will be runs where you will feel so overwhelmed at the sheer magintude of the human physical damage and suffering you may need counseling but I would bet you would not regret doing it.
You will make friends who laugh with you and cry with you. You will sometimes wonder if something you did caused more damage than good to critical patients and sometimes even beat yourself up for days over it.
You will be puked on, pooped on, peed on and punched. You’ll be cussed out, flipped off and sometimes even accused of criminal acts by patients and their families. You’ll have to deal with drunks and those whose actions have caused the deaths of innocent lives all the while remaing indifferent to their crimes while you do everythign you can to save them. You will deal with abused spouses without passing judgement on either party and learn not to mention anytjhing you saw or heard while talking to your friends.
Becoming a medic is not for everyone but if you do choose that path, you will be reqwarded in ways most people cannot imagine. It is one of the most noble professions you can enter while at the same time the most unappreciated profession on the market.

good luck on your decision.
