Driving in Phoenix, AZ and surrounding area?

I will be visiting Phoenix, AZ on business in a few months and would like to stay over a few days, rent a car, and visit the surrounding area. At this time I am planning to visit Sedona, the Grand Canyon, the Desert Botanical Garden (to catch the Chihuly exhibit there), and I also want to visit Taliesin West. (And I will be visiting other places such as the art museum on business.) And although I don’t mind traveling by myself, I usually am able to take public transportation or hop-on hop-off type tours so I am wondering about how much of a pain it will be to drive in these areas especially without someone helping me to look out for exits, check the map, etc.? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Both of the answers given a very good. I would like to suggest that you invest in a talking GPS device. Then you won’t need a map reader or someone to look for exits etc. A GPS will verbally tell you “Turn right 500 feet ahead.” Or in the case of driving to the Grand Canyon, “Stop 500 feet ahead, Big Hole in the ground.”

Enjoy your time in AZ.
