Business Plan Ethanol Plant

When using an oil screw press to produce vegetable oil from seeds, it can be difficult to determine a use for the byproducts. The two main byproducts of vegetable oil press production are meal and hulls. Luckily, both of these materials are able to perform valuable functions.

For most types of seeds that can be used with an oil screw press, it is first necessary to separate the hull or seedcoat from the seed. The quantity of leftover hulls can be considerable, especially when processing a large amount of seeds. However, the amount of hulls produced can actually be a boon, particularly for those whose oil production is part of a larger farm operation.

The way to use hulls varies depending on the type of hull. Soy hulls, for example, make an excellent substitute for either winter hay or corn. Soy is not the only type of hull that can be used as animal feed. Sunflower shells can also serve in this way.

In general, it is easier to find uses for meal than it is to find uses for hulls. The meal is what remains of the plant matter after the oil has been pressed out by the extraction process. As with hulls, the usages of meal vary depending on which species is being used. One type of meal, sesame seed cake, can actually be eaten by humans. This meal can serve as a tasty and nutritious ingredient in a variety of recipes.

Several kinds of meal can be valuable additions to animal feed. These include soy, canola, safflower and sunflower meals. None of these meals should be used by themselves as animal feed, but they can all be used as supplements that provide additional nutrition and volume to feed. The appropriate uses and methods vary by type of seed cake. For example, sunflower seed cake is well suited for use in the feeds of cattle, pigs, and chickens. However, when using sunflower meal it is important to keep in mind that it is high in protein but very low in carbohydrate content.

Similarly, soy meal requires special consideration as well. It contains trypsin inhibitors which can be neutralized through heating. It is necessary to do so before using soy meal in animal feed in order to ensure that livestock can fully digest the protein that soy meal contains.
