Business Plans with Punch
Too many companies use formulaic approaches to their business plans. The WSJ had a very good article last week about the pitfalls. Everyone’s potential market is huge; there is no real competition, blah, blah, blah. We find as a firm are well versed in producing and reviewing business plans. There are several cardinal rules to getting an investor’s attention. First, adopt objectivity within the plan. Try to avoid overly subjective reasoning in defending your business model.
Secondly, good plans have an abundant use of statistics and financial metrics to make key points. At the end of the day, business is most easily understood in financial terms.
Thirdly, do not go crazy with the growth projections. It is foolhardy to think that you can achieve supersonic growth or that you have a crystal ball that gives you a glimpse into the future. Your projections need to be grounded in reality.
The best business plans educate the reader and give them a framework within which they can understand the business. This framework should build on the perspective of the reviewing audience and help them place the company’s business model and business risk within their larger context of risk assessment. These are the types of plans that we have successful produced and used for our clients.
