Question about UPS for buisness servers?
Okay, so I asked this question yesterday, but I don’t think that I was asking it in the correct way, so I will try again.
I am taking a computer class and have to write a proposal to a business that I work for. This “business” (clearly not a real business) has 4 servers used for the business database, 3 servers for email, 2 servers for general file sharing, and 1 for the company website and intranet. Now, with this general information in mind I am supposed to come up with a good plan and UPS to keep all of this stuff safe. I am not given a specific server type or anything, this is all in general.. any suggestions?? All the help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again! ♥ Trish
Given that you don’t have any details of hardware (ie how many power-feeds each server has, or how much power each PSU uses) you’ll just have to be generic.
There’s a total of 10 servers listed there. I’d assume that each of these would have two power-supplies for redundancy. Since you’re not talking about data-centre wide UPSs (with massive battery-arrays capable of supplying thousands of servers for a few minutes whilst the backup generator starts up), you’ll be considering smaller UPS units, possibly with enough sockets to supply four power-supplies.
That makes 5 UPSs – and the one important thing to note when wiring them up is not to plug both supplies from the same server into the same UPS.
